ENEA at the "Soils for Europe" conference 2026

The “Soils for Europe” Conference will take place in Coimbra, Portugal, from 7 to 11 September 2026. Co-organised by several EU-funded projects under the EU Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe” (Mission Soil), the conference will bring together researchers, policymakers, land managers, civil society, and industry representatives to showcase innovative research and solutions for soil protection and sustainable management.

The conference will highlight the latest research and innovations being developed across Europe in support of the Mission Soil objectives, with cross-cutting sessions addressing key challenges for soil health and resilience. The event will also provide an opportunity to showcase innovations emerging from European-funded projects and to foster dialogue and collaboration among researchers and practitioners. A dedicated day will focus on European projects and Living Labs initiatives, highlighting their contribution to the implementation of Mission Soil objectives. ENEA will be actively involved in the conference programme, with contributions focusing on soil biodiversity, soil health assessment, new technologies, and the application of circular bioeconomy approaches to sustainable soil management. 

The conference will open on 7 September with the session “The Soil Monitoring Law and its implications for the sustainability of European soils”. The session is particularly relevant to ENEA’s technical-scientific support to the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) for the implementation of the European Soil Monitoring Law, providing a valuable European context for the ongoing work on the implementation of the Soil Monitoring Law in Italy. Dr Annamaria Bevivino, representing ENEA’s Sustainable Agri-food Systems Division (SSPT-AGROS), will deliver an oral presentation entitled: “Boosting Soil Biodiversity through Circular Bioeconomy Practices: Soil Health Biomarkers Assessment following Bio-Based Soil Improver Application”. The presentation will be given during the session “8.2 Enhance Soil Biodiversity” on 9 September 2026. The study, authored by Bevivino A., Nolfi L., Costanzo M., Tabacchioni S., Lorenz C., Torbado V.C., Olivier M., Cobo-Diaz J. and Marmiroli N., explores the assessment of soil health biomarkers following the application of bio-based soil improvers, highlighting the potential of circular bioeconomy practices to support soil biodiversity, multifunctionality, and climate-resilient agriculture, in the framework of DELISOIL project. On the same day, Dr. Lorenzo Nolfi, PhD student of University la Tuscia, will present the oral communication:“From Data Mining to Molecular Ecology: A Multi-Scale Approach to Soil Health”. The presentation will be delivered during the session “11.1 New Technologies and Innovations to Enhance Soil Health”. The contribution, authored by Nolfi L., Di Gregorio L., Visca A., Hansen V., Bauerle A., Salo T., Chourak Y., Marmiroli N., Palojärvi A. and Bevivino A., presents a multi-scale approach combining data mining and molecular ecology to investigate soil health, in the framework of DELISOIL project. 

Annamaria Bevivino (SSPT-AGROS), Lorenzo Nolfi (PhD student) and Silvia Tabacchioni (SSPT-AGROS-IFAL) will also participate in dissemination activities for the DELISOIL project, presenting the project's WP2 activities lead by ENEA and illustrating the soil improvers investigated in pot and field experiments. ENEA will also contribute to the MULTISOIL project booth at the Marketplace, with the poster: “From the Field to the Lab: Biolog EcoPlate™ Analyses of Soil Microbial Functionality in the Context of the MULTISOIL Project.” The poster, authored by Nolfi L., Lorenz C., Tabacchioni S., Friberg H., Loit K., Männistö M., Yli-Hemminki P. and Bevivino A., presents the use of Biolog EcoPlate™ analyses to investigate soil microbial functional diversity and functionality in the context of the MULTISOIL project
