Abstract

The main purpose of the present study was to analyze the parameters controlling the Py-C CVD/CVI processes, conducted by a pilot size Isothermal/Isobaric CVI plant. In order to validate the previously developed deposition and infiltration codes [1], the experimental results and the theoretical models were taking into consideration. In particular, the effect of residence time and methane/hydrogen ratio (α) on the deposition rate and the microstructure of Py-C was investigated. Furthermore, 2D fabric preforms of carbon fibres were densified at 1200 °C by means of Py-C infiltration, varying the concentration of the gas mixture (CH4 and H2) and the pressure of the process.
