SSPT Activities

These pages provide cross-cutting information applicable to all six divisions of the Territorial and Production Systems Sustainability Department.

The "Agreements and Partnerships" section provides a list of the main Agreements, Conventions and Memoranda of Understanding that the department has signed with the central, regional and local public administration and with the business sector.

The "Sustainability workshop" section provides a comprehensive overview of the "Sustainability workshop" initiative launched within the department in September 2015, which is still ongoing.

The "Technology Atlas" section provides summary information on the technological offerings and methodologies developed by the department and that the department can offer to the business sector, particularly to SMEs. Some of these technologies - having TRL values above 7 - may also be of interest in the activities carried out by the department in the field of technology transfer to developing countries.

USER Division of ENEA Department osf Sustainability supports the Country in the transition towards new production and consumption system based on sustainable supply and use of resources and on reduction of industrials emissions and social impacts. Closing the loops approach is pursued as a necessary goal to move towards a circular economy at various levels: wihin production processes, in industrial areas, on urban and extra-urban areas. The Division activities are part of the flagship initiative for a resource-efficient Europe, launched under the Europe 2020 strategy, wich promotes the shift towards a resource efficient and low-carbon economy to achieve a sustainable growth that creates economic opportunities, improves productivity, reduces costs and enhances competitiveness.

The Division carries out research, development and qualification of materials, components, devices and related manufacturing and integration processes in complex systems, promoting process and product innovation.
The division is present on the Italian territory in 6 of ENEA’s research centers with a staff of 115 units and recently launched further activities in the new ENEA Laboratory at “Kilometro Rosso” Innovation District in Bergamo.

The Division Models and Technologies for Risks reduction contributes to the competitiveness and sustainable development of our Country, carrying out research and technological activities in support to Public Administrations, enterprises and citizens. It provides tools and methods for the assessment of policies, plans and strategies to cope with risks adaptation and mitigation. Both natural and anthropogenic risks are addressed with specific focus on seismic and hydrogeological vulnerability, climate change and air quality.

“Natural capital” plays a key role in development, as it provides resources and services, defines the ecological limits of socio-economic systems and at the same time mitigates the impacts/effects of human activities. In this context, the Division operates through the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Laboratory and the Observations and Measurements for Environment and Climate Laboratory.

Focuses on innovation in the agro-industrial system for the development and competitiveness of food production in terms of quality, safety and sustainability, encouraging chain approaches, through agro-industrial and/or territory clusters.

The Health Protection Technology Division (SSPT-TECS), with its labs housed in the Casaccia Research Center, performs innovation and research activities in the field of biotechnology, radiation biology and toxicology, with applications on biomedicine industrial development, and human health protection.
Main goals are:

The Section assists the Director of the Department in carrying out its functions in relations with the Divisions of the Department, with the other Departments, with the Executive Bodies and with the outside of the Agency.

The Section coordinates the Department activities of technology transfer and general support to Developing Countries to minimise climate change impacts on territories and protect ecosystems, in the context of the UN Convention on Climate Change and within the frame of existing collaborations with Governmental Administrations, namely the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS).

The Section supports the Department in coordinating and fostering circular economy activities, aimed at the efficient use of resources and the eco-innovation of products, processes and systems. To this end, it provides an integrated and systemic vision in order to enhance planning and dissemination of knowledge and good practices regarding circular economy and foster dialogue with the main players (local, national and international).

The Service deals with the definition and finalization of active contractual relationships in collaboration with the Department Director and the Heads of the departmental Units and of the other Agency Units.

The Service manages all the processes established between ENEA and suppliers for the acquisition of goods and services in collaboration with the Department Director and the Heads of the departmental Units and of the other Agency Units.

The Section supports the Department Director in the management of the workplace with reference both to the logistical and safety aspects of the experimental systems, technological halls and laboratories and for the fulfillment of current safety regulations.
