Abstract

A new scaling of the poloidal plasma beta with the bootstrap fraction is derived for a steady-state tokamak. In this derivation, the seed current profile is specified, but no assumptions are made regarding the functional form of the total current profile. The scaling, which holds for a wide class of density and temperature profiles, exhibits a quadratic dependence of the poloidal beta on the bootstrap fraction. The effects of the ionic charge and unequal electron and ion temperatures are considered. © 1992 American Institute of Physics.
