ENEA and the Italian Space Agency (ASI) will co-host a Special Session titled "Challenges and Opportunities of Remote Sensing for Climate Change" during the XII AIT International Conference “Smart Earth Observation for a Sustainable Future”, taking place in Milan from November 12 to 14, 2025.
The session will open with a keynote speech by Gianmaria Sannino from ENEA Division Models, Observations and Scenarios for Climate Change and Air Quality, setting the scientific context of climate change with a focus on the challenges of its characterization and the role of global and regional climate models.
The agenda will then delve into how cutting-edge remote sensing technologies are being used to detect and monitor the impacts of climate change and to support mitigation strategies. Particular attention will be given to climate-related risks affecting the built environment—such as buildings, roads, bridges, parks, and critical infrastructures like transport, water, and energy networks—especially in vulnerable riverine and coastal urban areas.
The session also welcomes contributions showcasing the integration of multi-sensor remote sensing data with geospatial analysis, which are key to understanding complex environmental interdependencies and cascading impacts such as sea level rise, flooding, erosion, land subsidence, and aquifer depletion.
Additional topics will include applications in the monitoring of cultural and natural heritage, from archaeological sites and geological landscapes to water resources. Updates will also be presented on upcoming satellite missions, such as the NASA-ASI Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) mission, and ongoing developments of the IRIDE system.
The Call for Abstracts deadline is 20th of July, 2025: researchers, professionals, and stakeholders are invited to submit their contributions related to remote sensing and climate change challenges and solutions.
The AIT International Conference, organized by the Italian Association of Remote Sensing (AIT), is a leading event in the Earth observation community, offering a platform for scientific exchange and innovation toward a more sustainable future.
